# How can I track improvements in our waste over time?

Tracking your waste over time helps you understand whether your efforts are making a difference. You do not need to track everything. Looking at a few key numbers regularly is enough.

Start by focusing on:

- **Recycling rate**
Is your recycling rate improving over time?
- **Total (general) waste**
Is your company producing less (general) waste?
- **General waste**
Is general waste decreasing as sorting improves?

Instead of focusing on one single period, compare your data over time. This helps you see trends and understand whether changes in your work place are effective.

Here are some simple ways to track progress:

- Compare your data month by month. [You can easily follow this by adding yourself as a recipient to the Monthly Waste Reports sent from Carrot](https://hubspot.carrot.tech/en/resource-hub/how-do-i-access-waste-data-in-the-app-0-0-0?hsLang=en)
- Look for trend changes after you introduce a new initiative
- Focus on one goal at a time, such as reducing general waste
- Keep your tracking simple and consistent

It is normal that improvements take time. Small changes in habits may not show immediately, but consistent efforts will lead to better results over time.

A good approach is to make one change, follow your data, and then adjust if needed.
