Waste data can help you identify which buildings, areas, or waste streams should be prioritised first. A good place to start is by looking for patterns that show where performance is lower or where general waste volumes are highest.
Focus on:
- Low recycling rates
May indicate poor sorting or unclear setup - High levels of general waste
May show that recyclable waste is ending up in the wrong stream - High-volume waste streams
These often offer the biggest opportunity for improvement - Differences between buildings or areas
Large differences can help highlight where action is needed most
It is also useful to separate quick wins from longer-term improvements.
Quick wins may include:
- updating bin labels (e.g. by adding examples of what typical waste products go in that specific waste stream/bin)
- adjusting bin placement (e.g. by ensuring food waste is easily accessible by a kitchen/coffee machine)
- reviewing collection frequency (e.g. by checking whether certain bins often overfill before collection is due)
Longer-term improvements may include:
- redesigning sorting stations (e.g. by reviewing what typical waste streams are produced in the nearby area)
- improving tenant engagement (e.g. by ensuring they have access to Carrot for Tenants and by showcasing top performers at tenant meetings)
- changing the overall waste setup (e.g. removing smaller general waste bins across offices to motivate people to use a nearby sorting station)
