# How do I set up effective waste sorting stations?

Effective waste sorting stations make it easier for tenants to recycle correctly. A good setup should be simple, clear, and placed where waste is actually generated.

Here are some key things to consider:

- **Place stations where waste is created**  
  Sorting stations should be located near kitchens, shared spaces, social areas, and other high-use parts of the workplace
- **Keep the setup simple**  
  Too many waste streams can make sorting confusing. Focus on the waste types that are most relevant for the building
- **Use clear labels**  
  Labels should be easy to read and, where possible, include examples or visuals to help people sort correctly
- **Make the setup consistent**  
  Use the same structure, colours, and signage throughout the building so tenants know what to expect
- **Make sure there is enough capacity**  
  Overflowing bins can lead to poor sorting and contamination
- **Consider common office waste**  
  The setup should reflect the waste most often produced in the workplace, such as food waste, paper and cardboard, plastic packaging, food packaging, and general waste. Remember that coffee grounds are food waste!

It is also important to review how the stations are working in practice. Signs that the setup may need improvement include:

- **High levels of general waste**
- **Frequent contamination in recycling bins**
- **Bins that overflow regularly**
- **Waste streams that are rarely used**

A good approach is to start with a simple setup, review performance regularly, and make adjustments where needed. Small improvements in placement, signage, or capacity can make a big difference over time.
